Our vision
What we want is to let our nine-year-old cycle to school unaccompanied safely. And public spaces that are safe for children and also suitable for all other ages.
Our three priorities
- We want to make school environments even safer using school streets, cycle lanes, school transport plans, etc. At Heilig Hart College, we plan to make the school environment safe in consultation with Wezembeek-Oppem, ideally with safe cycle lanes. We want to introduce a ban on contractors delivering at the beginning and end of the school day. Like the traffic lights at GBS Moorsel, we want traffic lights in Vossem and Duisburg too so schoolchildren can cross safely. If technically feasible, the lights could even turn red if drivers are too fast. For GBS Vossem, Plintveld can be made into a school street and the extension of Voerpad will add an extra safe path to school.
Â
- We will extend cycle lanes where necessary:
- The missing section on the N3/Leuvensesteenweg between Moorsel/Vossem and Leefdaal. This is a regional road which is managed by the Agentschap Wegen en Verkeer, but we have finalised the plans with them. Work should start during the 2025-2030 legislature.
- The cycle path between Moorsel and Sterrebeek has been designed and will be implemented soon.
- Heidestraat has lots of cyclists, but the road is in urgent need of repair due to worn-out pipes. This is an opportunity to provide cycle lanes here too, making Heidestraat one-way if necessary.
- During the reconstruction of Stationsstraat (major sewerage works), a cycle path will be provided on both sides of the road.
- Waalsebaan between the intersection in the extension of Museumlaan and Sterrebeeklaan will be widened into a proper two-way cycle path.
Â
- We will tackle intersections that are dangerous for vulnerable road users:
- The intersection of Tervurenlaan with Oppemstraat will become a "green square". There will be a traffic light on the small Tervurenlaan so that cars do not have to block the pedestrian crossing and cycle path while waiting. The layout will give cyclists and pedestrians clear priority
- Pedestrians already have to be brave crossing Tervurenlaan at the Albertlaan tram stop where there is no zebra crossing or lights. This risk can be removed by creating a new connection for the Ravenstein neighbourhood (see chapter on responsible building).
- Except for the part of the Brusselsesteenweg between Boulengerlaan and Tervurenlaan, the Brusselsesteenweg could be made one-way. The extra space gained could be used for cycle paths and additional parking spaces.
- The crossing for cyclists and pedestrians at the corner of the Markt (at the Keizerskroon) will be made safer by replanning the market square.
- To make cycling from the park to the cycle lanes on Tervurenlaan safe, we will make the crossings from the park to the Koninklijke Moestuin safe with priority for cyclists. These works are planned as part of the construction of the F29 cycle highway during 2025.
