Our vision
The economy of the future should be local. A liveable, pleasant and convivial town is one that has commerce and services as well as liberal professions and small-scale offices.
We want village centres with thriving local trades and catering. Local merchants and caterers play a crucial role in the social life of Tervuren residents, both in the centre and in the villages.
Our three priorities
- We need high-quality services visible in the shopping centres. That means putting maximum effort into clean and attractive shopping centres. By making the area between the Lodge and Mont Blanc part of the square, we can make the Markt almost free of parking. It is much more pleasant to sit on a terrace among greenery than among cars. Cars coming from Duisburgsesteenweg can then detour via Vlonderse Hoek and Leuvensesteenweg. Leuvensesteenweg can then become a one-way street, creating space to make this important entrance to Tervuren more attractive and perhaps even provide extra parking spaces. Hoornzeelstraat, a key of the commercial centre, also needs redesigning to make it much more attractive for shops and their customers.
- It is not only what is in the shops themselves that is important, but also the whole range of types of traders present in Tervuren. For example, the municipality can encourage certain trades through targeted start-up grants.
- Concentrating supply in village centres means getting rid of vacant shops, which spoil the shopping experience. We would tackle this by first consulting the owner and then introducing a progressive vacancy tax, to prevent shops from being empty for too long. Empty shops can still bring life to the area by allowing pop-ups, or using them for temporary social or community purposes, or as art showcases.
